TOP 25 SHOWS 2021 YEAR IN REVIEW.

- Show of the Year will go to an anime, ending a Show of the Year drought for the genre that has lasted since 2015. The anime genre also had a relatively solid showing this year in the top-10; five anime finished in the top-10.
- Twenty-seven shows topped the T-10 chart this year, one shy of 2019 and 2020.
- Thirty-two shows debuted in 2021, a 3% gain from last year.
- Eight shows (25%) debuted at No. 1 on the T-10 chart, same as last year: We Never Learn: Bokuben (Feb. 13), Law & Order: Organized Crime (Apr. 3), Laid Back Camp (Apr. 17), Beastars (May 1), Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro (Jun. 19), Star Trek: Lower Decks (Oct. 9), Trese (Nov. 20), and Cop Craft (Dec. 25).
- There were two No. 1 debuts in Top 25 Shows in 2021: Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky in May and Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut in December.
- The grossing bust continued and deepened (especially in the 4th quarter) in 2021, culminating in the “struggle chart era” which began in August. The year finished with some of the lowest weekly grossing averages in nearly 15 years.
- The 2021 average came to 310.39 million grosses, the lowest annual average since 2009.
#1 - Tropical-Rouge! PreCure
- Tropical-Rouge! PreCure is the 2021 Top 25 Shows Show of the Year.
- It is the first anime to secure Show of the Year since 2015, when Etotama eked out a narrow victory over Go! Princess PreCure.
- Tropical led three Top 25 Shows charts in September, October, and November.
- It led ten T-10 charts: Mar. 13, Jun. 12, the seven-week reign from Aug. 14 to Sept. 25, and Oct. 16. It is first show to score ten T-10 Chart No. 1’s since Steven Universe in 2017.
- Its seven-week reign is the longest streak since Etotama’s ten-week reign back in 2015.
- It led the Annual Gross Races chart for 16 weeks, from Sept. 11 to the end of the year. It is the biggest grossing show of the year, grossing 16.06 billion grosses.
- Tropical beat #2 The David Pakman Show 468-420 points (52.7% to 47.3%).
#2 - The David Pakman Show
- The David Pakman Show narrowly finishes 2nd.
- It led one T-10 chart on Jan. 23.
- It was No. 1 on two Top 25 Shows chart: February and June.
- The show finished as strong as it did mainly thanks to two Pacesetters and a Greatest Gainer. This allowed it to handily win the most Top 25 Shows points, beating even Tropical-Rouge! PreCure.
- It finished 3rd on the Annual Gross Races chart grossing 10.85 billion grosses to date.
#3 - Beastars
- Beastars finished 3rd. It is among the strongest showings from the Netflix imprint.
- It led six T-10 charts, the second most of any show: May 1, May 22, Jul. 17, Jul. 24, Jul. 31, and Oct. 30.
- It peaked at #2 on the Top 25 Shows chart in August and September.
- Beastars grossed 7.12 billion grosses in 2021, finishing 4th on the Annual Gross Races chart.
#4 - Star Twinkle PreCure
- Star Twinkle PreCure finishes 4th. It is the first year where two Pretty Cure shows finished in the top-5 since 2012.
- It led two T-10 charts: Apr. 24 and Jul. 10.
- It also led two Top 25 Shows chart in July and August.
- Star grossed 12.03 billion grosses, finishing 2nd on the Annual Gross Races chart.
#5 - How It’s Made
- How It’s Made finishes 5th.
- It led one T-10 chart on June 5.
- It peaked at #3 on the January, March, and April’s Top 25 Shows charts.
- It finished 6th on the Annual Gross Races chart grossing 5.99 billion grosses.
Elsewhere on the chart…
- Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous finishes #6. It led one Top 25 Shows chart in April, and four T-10 charts: Feb. 20, Feb. 27, Mar. 6, and Mar. 20. It grossed 6.33 billion grosses in 2021, finishing 5th on the Annual Gross Races chart.
- Another Pretty Cure show, HUGtto! PreCure leaps to #8.
- Last year’s Show of the Year, Enchantimals, finishes 9th.
- The last anime to show up in the top-10, Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro finishes 10th. It led two T-10 charts: Jun. 19 and Jun. 26.
- Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid returned with a second season this year and finished 17th. It led two T-10 charts: Oct. 23 and Nov. 6.
- One Piece also returned and finished 18th. It led one T-10 chart on May 15.
- Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut, the big hit of the 4th quarter, finished 24th. The strong finish was mainly due to the four T-10 chart No. 1’s it won: Nov. 13, Nov. 27, Dec. 4, and Dec. 11.
