- Show of the Year will go to a non-anime once again after it went to an anime last year for the first time since 2015.
- There were 31 different No. 1 shows, matching 2018’s record.
- Thirty shows debuted in 2022, a 6.25% decrease vs. last year (32)
- Ten (33.3%) of them were No. 1 debuts: Healin’ Good PreCure (Jan. 1), In the Land of Leadale (Jan. 29), Freak Angels (Feb. 19), Kaiju Girls (Mar. 5), My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale (Apr. 9), Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon (Apr. 16), I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years And Maxed Out My Level (Jun. 11), Uma Musume: Pretty Derby (Jul. 16), Call of the Night (Oct. 8), and Sonic Prime (Dec. 24).
- There were seven No. 1 debuts in the first half, a record for a half.
- There was also a record five No. 1 debuts on the Top 25 Shows chart, including (for the first time ever) three in a row: Healin’ Good PreCure (February), In the Land of Leadale (March), Kaiju Girls (April), Uma Musume: Pretty Derby (August), and Call of the Night (November).
- The grossing bust continued in 2022. The year finished with 9-week moving averages falling to near 20 year lows. The 2022 average was 232.1 million grosses, the lowest annual average since 2004.
- The points system for the Year-End chart was changed this year. Instead of only giving a show credit for reaching No. 1 on the T-10 chart, the Year-End chart now takes into account the full weekly charts: all shows and all positions.
- The chart uses the following formula: 10/(p^0.5)*g, where p is the show’s position on the T-10 chart, and g is how much the show grossed that week. A similar formula was used for the Top 25 Shows chart: 10000/(p^0.5), where p is the show’s position on the Top 25 Shows chart.
#1 - My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale/Make Your Mark
- The G5 My Little Pony series, Tell Your Tale takes home Show of the Year for 2022.
- It is the second generation of My Little Pony to win Show of the Year. Its direct predecessor, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, is a two-time Show of the Year. Magic was the third show to win Show of the Year twice and the first to win in non-consecutive years (2012, 2016).
- Tell Your Tale led the Top 25 Shows chart in June.
- It also led two T-10 charts: April 9 and the century chart on July 9.
- Tell Your Tale grossed 10.21 billion grosses in 2022, the least amount on an annual basis since 2007. It led the Annual Gross Races chart for 11 weeks (Oct. 8-15, Oct. 29-Dec. 10, Dec. 24-31).
- Tell Your Tale beat its runner-up 110,195-103,373 points (51.6% to 48.4%), another close showing.
#2 - The Bold and the Beautiful
- Show of the Year for 2019, The Bold and the Beautiful, finishes 2nd.
- It led two T-10 charts: Dec. 3, where it broke the overall No. 1 week grossing record, and Dec. 17.
- It grossed 9.6 billion grosses, enough for a 2nd place finish on the Annual Gross Races chart. It led the AGR for 3 weeks (Oct. 1, Oct. 22 & Dec. 17).
#3 - Star Twinkle PreCure
- Last year’s 4th place finisher, Star Twinkle PreCure, finishes 3rd.
- It led no T-10 charts, but it did lead July’s Top 25 Shows chart.
- It grossed 6.46 billion grosses, finishing 3rd for 2022. It led the Annual Gross Races chart for 16 weeks (Jun. 11 to Sept. 24).
#4 - Prima Doll
- The newest anime to rank this high, Prima Doll, finishes 4th.
- It was the year’s leader in T-10 chart No. 1’s (7) and had the longest consecutive week reign of the year, leading the Aug. 13, Aug. 20, Aug. 27, Sept. 3, Sept. 10, Sept. 17, and Oct. 1 charts. It led October’s Top 25 Shows chart.
- It grossed 5.65 billion grosses, finishing 5th on the Annual Gross Races chart.
#5 - Healin’ Good PreCure
- Healin’ Good PreCure rounds out the Top 5.
- It led two T-10 charts: Jan. 1 and Jan. 8. It was the first show in chart history to have debuted at No. 1 on the New Years’ Day chart.
- It led February’s Top 25 Shows chart, debuting at No. 1 there too.
- It grossed 5.85 billion grosses, finishing 4th on the Annual Gross Races chart. It led the Annual Gross Races chart for 23 weeks (Jan. 1 to Jun. 4).
Elsewhere on the Chart…
- Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid finished 6th. It led three T-10 charts: Jan. 15, Jan. 22, and Jul. 2. It reached No. 2 on the February and March Top 25 Shows charts.
- Kaiju Girls finished 7th. It led one T-10 chart: Mar. 5. It became the first show to have grossed more than 600 million grosses in its opening week. It also broke the No. 1 debut grossing record and it holds the record to this day. It led April and May’s Top 25 Shows chart (the only show to have led two Top 25 Shows charts this year).
- The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! Finished 8th. It led two T-10 charts: Mar. 26 and Apr. 2.
- After School Dice Club finished 9th. It led one T-10 chart: Mar. 12.
- Takt op.Destiny finished 10th. It led one T-10 chart: Aug. 6 and led September’s Top 25 Shows chart.
- The rest of the Top 20 roughly follows the Annual Gross Races chart except for Tropical-Rouge! PreCure, 2021’s Show of the Year, finishing 11th and Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut finishing 14th.
- Strike Witches made a solid return late in the year, ultimately finishing 26th. It led two T-10 charts: Nov. 12 and Nov. 26. It re-entered at No. 1 in December, the first No. 1 re-entry since August, 2000.
- Due to the change in the point system, this year’s Year-End chart will be 50 positions rather than 35.
