TOP 25 SHOWS 2016 YEAR IN REVIEW.

- A non-anime will win Show of the Year in 2016, ending a three-year streak of having an anime Show of the Year. It is also the biggest Show of the Year victory since 2011.
- On the T-10 Chart, there were 30 No. 1’s, an 11.1% increase over last year’s 27 No. 1’s. It was the most since 2008 (31).
- Of the 30 No. 1 shows, sixteen were anime that led for a total of 29 weeks (down significantly from 40 weeks last year). That was the fewest number of weeks the anime genre led the T-10 chart in a single year since 2004 when just eight anime led for just 23 weeks. 2004 was largely before the anime boom.
- Thirty-two shows debuted on the T-10 chart this year. That is down from 35 in 2015.
- A record-tying eight shows (25% of the debuts) debuted at #1 on the T-10 chart: The Lion Guard (Jan. 16), Snow White with the Red Hair (Feb. 6), Revolutionary Girl Utena (Feb. 13), Anne Happy (Apr. 30), Dawn of the Croods (Aug. 6), Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa (Sept. 10), When They Cry (Nov. 12), and Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath (Dec. 10).
- The year ends with a streak of three No. 1 shows that grossed 500 million grosses: The Magic School Bus (Dec. 17), Mushishi (Dec. 24), and Digimon: Digital Monsters (Dec. 31).
- Two shows debuted at No. 1 on the Top 25 Shows chart: GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class in January and Anne Happy in June. The Anne Happy debut was the one Grand Slam.

- My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is the 2016 Show of the Year. It accomplishes what it failed to do in 2014: it becomes the third show to become a two-time Show of the Year following Redwall (2002-03) and Sister Princess (2009-10) and the first to accomplish the feat in non-consecutive years. Pony beat Smile PreCure! In 2012 by 4 percentage points in an upset.
- My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic led all shows in both Top 25 Shows and T-10 chart No. 1’s. It was No. 1 in September, October, and December. The December No. 1 allowed Pony to tie Redwall in all-time career No. 1’s on the Top 25 Shows chart with 12. It led the T-10 chart for eight weeks on Jan. 23, Jan. 30, May 7, Jun. 18, Aug. 20, Sept. 17, Oct. 8, and Oct. 29.
- My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic routs Lucha Underground 581-472 points (55.18% to 44.72%).
- Pony’s 10.46 percent victory is the largest the winner had over the runner-up since 2011 when Suite PreCure crushed Bleach 616-499 or 55.25 to 44.75% (10.5%).
- Pony won this year basically for three reasons: strong off-season performance (before and after), strong performance during the season, and a strong finish. Pony put in perhaps the strongest finish since 2011 making the T-10 chart for all but one week.
- Pony is the biggest grossing show of the year grossing 17.85 billion grosses. It led the final seven weeks of the year.
- Lucha Underground finishes 2nd. Lucha had a much weaker showing than Pony, leading the chart for one month in March and leading the T-10 chart on Mar. 26 tying with Revolutionary Girl Utena.
- Lucha led the Annual Gross Races chart for seven weeks and finished 3rd on the tally with 14.95 billion grosses.
- The Young and the Restless finishes 3rd. It did not lead a Top 25 Shows chart but it did lead the Jan. 9 T-10 chart.
- Y&R led the Annual Gross Races chart for 18 of 53 weeks. It ended the year in 4th place with 14.48 billion.
- The Bold and the Beautiful finished 4th. B&B led the April 9th T-10 chart.
- Beautiful was the 2nd biggest grossing show of year with 15.7 billion grosses. It led the Annual Gross Races chart for 11 weeks.
- Star Wars Rebels finished 5th. Rebels was No. 1 on November’s Top 25 Shows chart. It was No. 1 on the Feb. 20 and Mar. 5 T-10 charts. It won four No. 2 during the month of October.
- Rebels led the Annual Gross Races chart for one week (on Apr. 9) and was the 7th largest grossing show of the year with 8.98 billion grosses.
- How It’s Made finished 6th. It led two T-10 charts on Apr. 23 and Jun. 11. It was the 6th biggest grossing show of 2016.
- Maho Girls PreCure! Finished 7th. It is the highest ranking anime on the Year-End chart. Maho put in one of the weakest showings for a new Pretty Cure season leading only the May Top 25 Shows chart and four T-10 charts: Apr. 2, Apr. 16, Jul. 2, and Dec. 3.
- Maho finished 5th on the Annual Gross Races chart grossing 11.76 billion grosses.
- Revolutionary Girl Utena finished 8th. Utena led the Top 25 Shows chart in April and won No. 1 on five T-10 charts: Feb. 13, Feb. 27, Mar. 12, Mar. 19, and Mar. 26. The show, however, had a weak showing after the middle of April.
- Utena was the 10th biggest grossing show of 2016 with 5.87 billion grosses.
- The Lion Guard finishes 9th. Lion led two T-10 charts: Jan. 16 and Aug. 13. Lion was the 8th biggest grossing show of 2016 with 8.04 billion grosses.
- Star Trek: The Next Generation finishes 10th.
Elsewhere on the chart…
- Anne Happy finishes 12th. Anne had a somewhat feeble showing on the Year-End chart despite a healthy showing on the T-10 and Top 25 Shows charts. Anne led four T-10 charts: Apr. 30, May 14, May 28, and Jul. 9. It was also No. 1 on the Top 25 Shows chart for three straight months in June, July, and August.
- Anne was the 11th biggest grossing show of the year with 5.73 billion grosses.
- Fantastic Children finishes 14th. Children put in a decent showing leading the first T-10 chart of the year and hitting No. 1 on February’s Top 25 Shows chart.
- Children also led the Annual Gross Races chart for nine weeks during the first quarter. It finished 14th on that chart with 4.39 billion grosses.
- Etotama, last year’s Show of the Year, finished 22nd this year.
