Summary.

An anime reclaims Show of the Year after a seven-year anime-exclusive Show of the Year streak ended last year. An anime takes Show of the Year for the eighth time in nine years. Unlike 2012, growth remained modest and steady throughout 2013 with a spurt of activity in the fall.

Also to celebrate the 15-year anniversary of Top 25 Shows back in February, the Top 25 Shows 250 was introduced. It is a list of the best performing shows in the chart’s history compiled using the inverse point system used to compile this very Year-End chart and all Year-End charts since 2009.

Top 10 Shows of the Week (T-10 chart).

On the Top 10 Shows of the Week (T-10) chart, there were twenty-seven different No. 1 shows in 2013, an increase over the 19 last year. The year-over-year increase in No. 1’s was the first since 2007, and produced the most No. 1’s since 2010 when there were 28. Of the 27 No. 1 shows, 16 were anime leading for 36 out of 52 weeks (37 if you include the tie as a full week).

The Top 10 Shows of the Week chart also underwent a name change on Jun. 1. It became known as the “T-10” chart.

There were 21 debuts in 2013, the fewest on record, breaking the previous record of 22 set last year. Like 2012, debuts ran at a modestly fast clip during the first half months of the year (14 in the 1st half, 7 in the 2nd).

There were five No. 1 debuts this year, picking up from last year and tying with 1999, 2006, 2007, and 2011 for second most on record. They were as follows: Fafner (Jan. 12; earliest No. 1 debut on record), DokiDoki! Pretty Cure (Feb. 9), Adventure Time (May 11), Fractale (Jun. 1), and Yuyushiki (Oct. 26). There were four No. 1 debuts in the first half of the year, the most since 2010 when there were five.

#1 debuts in Top 25 Shows.

There were two No. 1 debuts in Top 25 Shows. Both were Grand Slam No. 1 debuts. DokiDoki! Pretty Cure debuted at No. 1 in March, the first No. 1 debut in March. The other was Fractale in July. The only month that lacks a No. 1 debut now is August. Doki and Fractale were the 21st and 22nd No. 1 debuts on the Top 25 Shows chart and the 10th and 11th Grand Slams, respectively.

The Year-End Wrap Up.

DokiDoki! Pretty Cure is 2013 Top 25 Shows Show of the Year. This hands Show of the Year to an anime for the eighth time in nine years. It also gives Japanese animation firm Toei Animation is third Show of the Year title. It is the second season from the Pretty Cure franchise to win Show of the Year. The first was in 2011 when Suite PreCure! Decisively defeated Bleach to claim a Show of the Year victory.

Doki had the most No. 1’s on the T-10 chart this year with nine. Beginning with a four week streak at No. 1 from Feb. 9 to Mar. 2, it also hit No. 1 on Mar. 16, Apr. 13, Jul. 6, Sept. 28, and Dec. 7. It was the second biggest grossing show this year with 18.42 billion grosses. As previously mentioned, it debuted at No. 1 in March, and led again in May.

Doki won a narrow 488-460 victory over first runner-up The Bold and the Beautiful. The 28-point margin of victory for Doki is even narrower than last year’s 505-464 (41 point) My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic victory over Smile PreCure! It is a great deal narrower than the 606-399 (207 point) trouncing Suite PreCure! Dealt Bleach in 2011.

The two remaining CBS daytime serials finished 2nd and 3rd.The Bold and the Beautiful finished 2nd, very narrowly missing its chance of becoming the first live-action show to win Show of the Year. Beautiful won two No. 1’s this year: Mar. 30 and Apr. 6, the first consecutive week reign from a live-action show since Days of Our Lives led for two frames in November, 2003. It led two Top 25 Shows charts: in April and August. Beautiful was the 3rd biggest grossing show of the year with 15.79 billion.

The Young and the Restless finishes 3rd for a second straight year. Y&R won just one No. 1 on the T-10 chart this year, on Jul. 13. The Young and the Restless is the biggest grossing show of the year for a second year in a row grossing a record 20.75 billion grosses, breaking the annual grossing record it set just last year (20.11 billion). It too led two Top 25 Shows charts: in February and September.

Star Trek: The Next Generation finished 4th. TNG led only one T-10 chart: May 18. It peaked at No. 3 on the Top 25 Shows chart in August. It was the 4th biggest grossing show of the year with 10.53 billion grosses.

Littlest Pet Shop rounds out the top-5. Pet led two T-10 charts: on Mar. 9 and Nov. 9. It peaked at No. 3 on the Top 25 Shows chart in February. It was the fifth biggest grossing show of the year with 7.82 billion grosses.

Yes! PreCure 5 was the second highest ranked Pretty Cure show finishing 6th. YPC5 led two T-10 charts: on May 4 and May 25. It reached No. 1 on the Top 25 Shows chart in June. It is the only other Pretty Cure season to have led the Top 25 Shows chart besides the most recent three seasons (Yes! PreCure 5 GoGo! Charts with the original). YPC5 was the 8th biggest grossing show of the year with 6.71 billion grosses.

Rozen Maiden finishes 7th. A third season of Rozen Maiden aired during the summer. That new season allowed the show to lead for five straight weeks on the T-10 chart from Aug. 17 to Sept. 14 (one week, Sept. 7, was a tie with Sister Princess). The new season also pushed the show back to No. 1 for a third time in October. Rozen was the 11th biggest grossing show of the year with 5.99 billion grosses. Rozen currently holds the overall No. 1 week grossing record. It grossed 490 million grosses on Aug. 31.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, 2012 Show of the Year winner, finished 8th. Pony led the T-10 chart three times in 2013: Jan. 5, Nov. 30, and Dec. 21. A short 3rd season and its weak showing during the off season is what kept it from a stronger showing this year. A strong showing during the off season last year is one of the events that propelled it to the top of the Year-End chart in 2012.

Adventure Time finishes 9th. Adventure led two T-10 charts: it debuted at No. 1 on May 11 and led on Aug. 10. It broke the overall No. 1 week grossing record with the Aug. 10 No. 1, which was promptly broken again three weeks later by Rozen Maiden. Adventure peaked at No. 7 in September. Adventure is the 13th biggest grossing show of the year with 4.86 billion.

The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell finishes 10th. It didn’t lead any T-10 charts this year. It peaked at No. 5 on the Top 25 Shows chart in February and March and grossed 7.11 billion grosses for a 7th place finish on the Annual Gross Races chart.

Sound of the Sky notches an auspiciously strong 11th place finish. Sky led five T-10 charts this year: Sept. 21, a three-week hat trick from Oct. 5 to Oct. 19, and Nov. 2. The hat trick was the highest grossing hat trick on record. It led the November and December Top 25 Shows chart, the first show this year to win two straight months at No. 1. Sky was the 6th biggest grossing show of the year with 7.58 billion grosses.

Other appearances.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles finishes 12th. It led one T-10 chart on Mar. 23. It broke the No. 1 week grossing record that week and held it until Aug. 10. SheZow, which premiered on the Hub network during the summer, finished 15th. Smile PreCure!, last year’s first runner-up, finishes 16th. It led two T-10 charts this year on Jan. 19, which resulted in the show breaking the overall No. 1 week grossing record (which was broken by the 12th place finisher, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, on Mar. 23), and on Nov. 23.

Fractale finished 21st. Fractale led three straight T-10 charts from Jun. 1 to Jun. 15. The hat trick was enough to cement a No. 1 debut on the July Top 25 Shows chart. T.U.F.F. Puppy finished 22nd. It led one T-10 chart: on Jul. 20. It reached No. 3 on the Top 25 Shows chart in September.
