The Show of the Year will go to an anime for a seventh straight year. Japanese animation firm Toei Animation had a strong year this year due to its Pretty Cure franchise. The Pretty Cure shows allowed Toei to make six appearances on this year’s chart, the most from any imprint this year. It also wins its second Show of the Year title, its first in 11 years.

Even though the anime sector mustered another fairly decent year, it was the weakest year for the sector on the Top 10 Shows of the Week chart since 2004. There were 24 different No. 1’s on the Top 10 Shows of the Week chart this year, the fewest since 2004 when there were 22. Of those twenty-four different No. 1’s, just sixteen were anime (the fewest since 2004), leading for 43 out of 53 weeks.

There were five No. 1 debuts on the Top 10 Shows of the Week chart in 2011, putting it in a four-way tie for second most in a single year with 1999, 2006, and 2007. They were as follows: Suite PreCure on Mar. 26, Futari wa Pretty Cure on May 28, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness on Nov. 12, Beast Player Erin on Dec. 24, and Rozen Maiden on Dec. 31. There was just one No. 1 debut on the Top 25 Shows chart this year: Dog Days in June. The June chart was reissued on June 11 to have Dog debut at No. 1, the first No. 1 debut by way of a re-issued chart since November, 2002 when Lloyd in Space debuted at No. 1.

It was also the strongest year for the non-anime animated show sector since 2004. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic wound up being the biggest non-anime animated show in Top 25 Shows this year. Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness was the first show from this sector to post a Top 10 Shows of the Week No. 1 debut since September, 2004.

Suite PreCure is the 2011 Top 25 Shows Show of the Year. This is the most commanding Show of the Year victory for any Year-End chart perhaps since 2002. As previously mentioned, it is the second Show of the Year title for Toei Animation, the first since 2000 when imprint-mate Digimon: Digital Monsters won Show of the Year.

Suite won the most Top 10 Shows of the Week No. 1’s of any show this year with 13. That is the most ever in a show’s inaugural year. Most of it came from its eight week streak at No. 1 from August 6 to September 24. It also led on Mar. 26, Jul. 2, Oct. 22, Nov. 5, and Dec. 3. It also won ten No. 2’s, the third most in a single year, trailing Digimon in 2001 (13) and 2000 (14). Suite was the biggest grossing show of 2011 grossing 17.31 billion grosses, a single-year record. Suite also utterly dominated the Quarter Gross Races chart this year. It led for 29 out of 31 weeks, including 17 straight weeks from June 4 to September 24. It was the biggest grossing show for three straight quarters.

Suite was No. 1 for five consecutive months on the Top 25 Shows chart, leading from July to November. It was the longest consecutive streak at No. 1 from an anime in Top 25 Shows history, and the longest from any show since 2003.

Bleach, the Show of the Year berth clincher back in July, finishes 2nd. Bleach was No. 1 on May’s Top 25 Shows chart, and led June’s chart as well until the chart was reissued. It won six Top 10 Shows of the Week No. 1‘s: Jan. 29, Apr. 9, Apr. 16, Apr. 23, May 14, and May 21. That was the most of any show until Suite PreCure surpassed it on September 3. It led the Annual Gross Races chart from April 2 to August 27, and finished 3rd on that tally grossing 11.85 billion. On July 9, Bleach became the first animated show (and one of only three shows overall) in Top 25 Shows history to gross more than 30 billion career grosses.

TruTV Presents World’s Dumbest had a surprisingly strong 3rd place finish. With no No. 1’s on the Top 10 chart this year, the show was the 2nd biggest grossing show of 2011 grossing more than 13.33 billion grosses. It peaked at No. 2 on January’s Top 25 Shows chart.

Psychic Detective Yakumo, a favorite to win Show of the Year early on this year, finishes 4th. That’s up from a auspicious 21st place finish last year due to a strong performance on the Top 10 Shows of the Week chart. Yakumo spent the first four weeks of the year at No. 1, which was the last four weeks of a record-smashing 11 consecutive week reign at No. 1. That is the record for the most consecutive weeks at No. 1 from an anime. It also completed four consecutive frames at No. 1 in Top 25 Shows, the first anime to do so. Yakumo finished 9th in total grosses in 2011 grossing 6.38 billion.

Yakumo 4th place finish is a new Year-End chart best for Bee Train, topping a 7th place finish from .hack//Roots in 2007.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit finishes 5th. SVU led the Top 10 Shows of the Week chart on October 8 and finished 5th on the Annual Gross Races chart.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic finished 6th. This reboot of the 1980’s animated series won three Top 10 Shows of the Week No. 1’s on Jul. 23, Nov. 19, and Dec. 17. It held the No. 1 week grossing record from July 23 to October 15. Pony led December’s Top 25 Shows chart, putting an exclamation point on the strongest year for non-anime animated shows since 2004. Pony was the first non-anime animated show to lead Top 25 Shows since November, 2004.

The Rachel Maddow Show, last year’s 2nd place finisher, drops to No. 7. Maddow led the Top 10 Shows of the Week chart on March 12 and finished 6th on the Annual Gross Races chart. HeartCatch PreCure! Was the second highest finishing Pretty Cure show at No. 8. HeartCatch peaked at No. 2 on November’s Top 25 Shows chart. It finishes 7th on the Annual Gross Races chart. It was No. 1 on the Top 10 chart twice: on Jun. 18 (which resulted in a record grossing week), and Jul. 30.

Pretty Cure Splash Star finishes 9th. It is the third and last appearance from the Toei Animation imprint in the top-10. Splash was the highest debuting show in the Pretty Cure franchise, entering and peaking at No. 2 in August. That ties for the highest August debut ever. Splash was the 8th biggest grossing show of the year. Criminal Minds rounds out the top-10. Criminal topped out at No. 4 in January and November’s Top 25 Shows charts.

Shinryaku! Ika Musume, also known as Squid Girl, finishes 12th. It led for four consecutive weeks on the Top 10 chart from Feb. 12 to Mar. 5, and reached No. 1 on April’s Top 25 Shows chart. Dog Days finishes 13th. Dog became the lone No. 1 debut this year on June’s Top 25 Shows chart and reached the summit on the weekly tally twice: first on May 7 and again on June 11. Spider Riders finishes 15th.

The other three Pretty Cure shows finished as follows: Fresh Pretty Cure (14th), Futari wa Pretty Cure (19th), and Yes! PreCure 5 (21st). Fresh topped out at No. 5 on November’s Top 25 Shows chart and won one Top 10 chart No. 1 on October 1. The original Pretty Cure peaked at No. 6 in July and also won just one Top 10 Shows No. 1 on May 28. Yes! PreCure 5 peaked at No. 3 in July and led the Top 10 Shows of the Week chart on June 4.

Les Miserables: Shoujo Cosette finished 24th. Lesmise had a surprisingly strong No. 2 debut in February, tying for the strongest debut ever in February. The 2009 and 2010 Show of the Year, Sister Princess, finishes 2011 at No. 25.
