One word pretty much sums up 2005 in Top 25 Shows: anime. That’s right. The animes pretty much dominated Top 25 Shows this year. Just this year alone, Top 25 Shows saw its first ever anime-exclusive Top-5 (April) and Top-10 (November). Just a couple of weeks ago on Dec. 17, there was an anime-exclusive Top 10 Shows of the Week chart. Animes were No. 1 in Top 25 Shows every month this year -- a first -- and in T10SW, eighteen animes were No. 1 for 43 weeks out of 53. This represents 81% of 2005’s chart weeks!
The show that finished 2nd in 2004, “InuYasha”, becomes the second anime in Top 25 Shows history to be named Show of the Year. The first, of course, was “Digimon” back in 2000. For a second straight year, “InuYasha” was the biggest grossing show of the year, picking up another gross bonus worth 1 billion grosses. The only other show in Top 25 Shows
Of course, “InuYasha” is not the lone anime in the Year-End chart. The entire Top-6 on this year’s recap are all animes.
The biggest new show of 2005, “Mew Mew Power”, finishes the year 2nd. “Mew Mew Power” broke the record for the most inaugural-year No. 1’s with 10 back in April and May. “Power” was also No. 1 during those two months in Top 25 Shows. FUNimation-imprint show “Fullmetal Alchemist” completes the first-ever anime-exclusive top-3 on the Year-End recap. “Fullmetal Alchemist” was the year’s second biggest grossing show.
“Vandread” continues the anime-heavy Year-End recap finishing 4th on the year. “Vandread” finished 14th on the year in grosses, but become the lone show to debut at No. 1 in Top 25 Shows this year, automatically guaranteeing it a Top-5 finish to the year. The biggest surprise hit of the year, “Magical DoReMi”, finishes an incredible year for the show 5th. “DoReMi” received a 500 million gross bonus for leading the entire 4th quarter, allowing it to finish 9th on the year in grosses.
Another surprise hit, “.hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet”, finishes 6th in 2005. The first No. 1 show of 2005 in Top 10 Shows of the Week, “Pimp My Ride” finishes 7th. The show that was once called “the Star Trek of animes“, “Neon Genesis Evangelion” finishes the year 8th. “Evangelion” smashed several grossing records in its October 22 debut in T10SW. “Law & Order” finishes the year 9th, its best Year-End recap finish ever. “WWE Smackdown!” closes out the top-10.
Elsewhere on the Year-End recap, “Azumanga Daioh” finishes 12th. “Days of Our Lives” finished 16th while another hit anime, “Naruto” finished one rung lower (17th) in 2005. “House” finished 19th and “Dragonball Z” finished 20th.
“Passions” plummets to a 27th place finish, its worst finish ever. 2004’s Show of the Year, “Jakers!: The Adventures of Piggley Winks”, plunges to a 28th place finish. “Sailor Moon” finishes 33rd because of a strong performance on the Bubbling Under and Recurrents chart. “Fruits Basket” backs up the Year-End chart at No. 35.
